Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site in Barbourville, Kentucky is a historic site that tells the story of Dr. Thomas Walker and his family. Dr. Walker was an explorer, physician, educator, and statesman who served as the first president of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY in 1799-1800. Dr. Walker’s father purchased this property in 1796 to be used by the family when they came to visit relatives living near here on Hickory Creek Pike (part of present-day U.S Highway 25). The house where Drs. John and David Walker lived with their families and still stand on the property today along with other buildings from earlier periods of time including an 18th-century distillery building that has been restored to its original condition.
